Starship | SN11 | High-Altitude Flight Test
As early as Tuesday, March 30, the SpaceX team will attempt a high-altitude flight test of Starship serial number 11 (SN11) - our fourth high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from Starbase in Texas. Similar to previous high-altitude flight tests of Starship, SN11 will be powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee - approximately 10 km in altitude. SN11 will perform a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.
The Starship prototype will descend under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps are actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enable precise landing at the intended location. SN11’s Raptor engines will then reignite as the vehicle attempts a landing flip maneuver immediately before touching down on the landing pad adjacent to the launch mount.
A controlled aerodynamic descent with body flaps and vertical landing capability, combined with in-space refilling, are critical to landing Starship at destinations across the solar system where prepared surfaces or runways do not exist, and returning to Earth. This capability will enable a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration, interplanetary flights and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.
Given the dynamic schedule of development testing, stay tuned to our social media channels for updates as we move toward SpaceX’s fourth high-altitude flight test of Starship!

Does the SN series starships have any type of gyroscope or gyroscopic stabilizer in it? Can it be used to control the landing form the belly flop maneuver from over rotation? Can you increase the raptor engine nozzle gimbaling angles?
Jack Whitlock
Prieš 18 val
@John Ruckman They do that to reduce Horizontal Velocity
John Ruckman

@Jack Whitlock So why the over rotation from the belly flop maneuver? The gyrostabilizers combined with the navigation/steering units should prevent that.

Yes, they all have gyroscopes. They don’t need to increase the gimbal limit

Can you takeover the airline industry also? Please show these greedy fat cats how it’s done. Tesla is already owning the automobile industry. At least think about marketing your older models in car rentals near airports or train stations. Take this opportunity to monopolize the transportation market and use your ships for international flights!

I have a suggestion for SpaceX for the engine area. Rather than that area being a cylinder, make a dome in the top of that engine shroud. It would do 3 things: 1) Improve thrust 2) Improve stability while landing 3) Reduce the noise That noise comes from the cylindrical shape of that bottom shroud area. Combining the idea of a "Hemi" engine (where the combustion chamber is in the shape of a dome), I think this would make tons of improvements.

And actually, it's not just the noise, but the vibrations that tend to shake things apart. A dome would help stabilize the whole bottom of the Starship. After all, humans have been building dome-shaped buildings for centuries...

#SpaceX Why don't you use the same system for landing as you do with your Falcon rockets and your intended main Starship booster? It works!
Lmao.
Prieš 11 dienų
Starship in particular will be coming from orbital speeds, both on earth and mars and going into a belly flop burns off a lot more speed than descending like the falcon 9 and the first stage. It also has more maneuverability at said angle with its fins. The landing system coming out of that belly flop needs to be able to land in rough terrain and landing like a rocket is much easier than landing like a plane. It also makes it easier to take off again.

There is a better way to land StarShip and the heavy booster. If the landing pad was made out of a metal grid of sorts and raised 50+ feet into the air, when a space craft comes in for a landing the pad drops as the craft touches down. The pad then does all the breaking so no major legs are needed to cushion the landing. This is a much safer way to land. The drop and break landing pad absorbs all the energy. It can be made very low tech so as not to fail. Come on we can do this!
TimePro
Prieš 7 dienų
@htannberg I fail to see what’s wrong with doing it SpaceXs way...
htannberg
Prieš 7 dienų
@TimePro Yes, I truly believe so. All the mega hard stuff has already be done. Landing a spacecraft on a 100? foot circle for example. Slowing 240 tons down from 5 or 10 mph to zero in 50 feet should not be too hard for SpaceX engineers.
TimePro
Prieš 7 dienų
@htannberg You call your design SIMPLE?
htannberg
Prieš 7 dienų
@TimePro I'm sure the Ford Pinto engineers said the same thing. It comes down to, too many things have to go right for the catch a booster to work. Why design something harder than it has to be? A simple design that works is always better.

I,m not an engineer but as I've seen the lift and landing, in case of landing maneuver it seems to have huge momentum that the engines can't harmonize the huge momentum to the required landing momentum or speed. Perhaps it may need more time as that landing maneuver must start from a reasonably high distance to enable the engines to harmonize the huge momentum, parachuting may be needed to reduce the great pressure created by engines abruptly to absorb the kinetic energy , in turn may lead to destroying the ship.

@Jul1an unfortunately spacex does not exist without Nasa. At least for now. Spacex works together with Nasa in many fields, and spacex gets a lot of money from Nasa programs which is government funding. Spacex Just build rockets , while Nasa, makes lab research, provide astronauts and many other things that are essential to go mars. Spacex may have a rocket ready for mars very soon, but so many other factors are in game, such as getting an entire crew ready to stay 500+ days in space, make the journey significant economically, doing the correct research, and have enough safety for future missions. Not for this decade.
